Finding the Glimmer of Hope in Your Grief Journey

Grief can feel like a vast, unending night. But even in the darkest moments, there are glimmers of hope that can help guide us through. From my experience as a death doula, I’ve learned that embracing these small pockets of light is crucial to finding our way forward.

What Is a Glimmer of Hope?

A glimmer of hope is a fleeting moment of joy, comfort, or peace that emerges even amidst profound grief. These moments might seem insignificant compared to the depth of our sorrow, but they serve as crucial markers on our journey through mourning.

How to Find the Glimmers in Grief

When you're grieving, these glimmers might feel hard to come by, but they’re there—waiting for you to notice them. Here are a few gentle ways to discover those pockets of hope:

  1. Notice the Small Things: It could be the warmth of a cup of tea in your hands, the way the sun filters through the window in the morning, or the sound of birds chirping. These small, beautiful moments remind us that life continues, and beauty still exists amidst the pain.

  2. Give Yourself Permission to Feel: It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to laugh. It’s okay to feel everything all at once. Grief doesn’t follow a schedule, and your emotions will likely range from deep sadness to moments of lightness. Follow those moments of joy when they come—they are a gift from the universe. Feel it all and give yourself grace through the process.

  3. Connect with Your Loved Ones: Whether they’re here in the physical world or on the other side, connection brings healing. Speak with those who understand you, who will sit in the silence or share in your memories. And if you’re missing someone who’s passed, remember that you can still connect with their energy through memory, reflection, and even through intuitive mediumship.

  4. Create Rituals to Honor Your Loved One: Sometimes, finding hope means creating something new in the wake of your loss. Lighting a candle for your loved one, planting a tree in their honor, or simply sitting in reflection during a quiet moment can offer you a sense of peace and purpose.

  5. Trust the Process: Trust that these glimmers will come when you need them most. Grief doesn’t follow a linear path, but with each small glimmer, you’re taking steps forward—even when it feels like you’re standing still.
